We are a friendly bunch
Zest Trustee and LCS Director
My name is Barbara Rhodes. I have had a lifelong interest in food and farming and have worked in the food industry most of my working life. I qualified in Dairying at Lancashire College of Agriculture in 1973. I have three grown up children and when they were small, I qualified as a breastfeeding counsellor and set up a support group. Eventually from this, we developed a mother and toddler group and a wholefood coop, trading with Suma.I also became a registered childminder. For a stay at home mum, I was pretty busy!
Moving on 17 years, following the long term illness of my husband, (he is still with us),I had to rejoin the world of work and got a job with the Danish farmers cooperative that is now Arla, developing new dairy products. I was involved with the 'invention' of Cravendale which as gone on to be a massive success. I also developed the boozy creams that have become a Christmas tradition. After Arla, I worked for a number of household names, such as McCain's and Asda, and many less well known food and farming related businesses, such as Askham Bryan College in York.
I was Student Union President at Lancashire college, and have been a Youth and Community Worker and a Parish Councillor in my home village, so I have always had the instinct to get stuck in and try to make things work better in my community. The opportunity to join Zest and more recently LCS was a great opportunity and continues to use my food experience with something really exciting.
My personal passions are: my burgeoning family, I also love cooking, the countryside and horse riding, as well as my lovely Basset Hound.
